The world premier of Michael Nyman’s Symphony No.11: Hillsborough Memorial was performed at Liverpool Cathedral for the opening weekend of the 8th edition of the Liverpool Biennial on July 5th 2014. The piece was performed by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth and Training Choirs and conducted by Josep Vicent. It was the greatest honour to sing the names of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Disaster during the first movement. The piece was performed twice on Saturday – firstly for some of the families of the victims and to members of the public. It was incredible to witness two standing ovations after the performances in the magnificent setting of Liverpool Cathedral, where the Hillsborough Independent Panel Report has previously been published in September 2012. It was an intensely moving piece of music and occasion – and one I will never forget.
A recording of the symphony will be played in Liverpool Cathedral at 15:06 on Wednesday 6th August, Monday 25th August, Wednesday 3rd September and Wednesday 17th September 2014. The Liverpool Biennial runs from 5 July – 26th October 2014. “The Band of Life” a special sculpture commissioned by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson – to remember the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster will also on display in the Cathedral Chapter House until September.
