Bach B Minor Mass – Bedford Choral Society
March 26 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
BEDFORD CHORAL SOCIETY: BACH B MINOR MASS
A performance of sublime music with some of Bach’s most exceptional and memorable melodies embedded in a symmetry of composition. It represents the culmination of his art in a single work.
The choir and soloists will be accompanied by the Bedford Sinfonia and conducted by Ian Smith.
Bach’s B minor Mass was composed in parts over a number of years. Only in later life did he add the remaining sections to the three parts already composed (largely from music from earlier works). The Mass is in short sections in a mixture of styles. Local traditions dictated a considerable burden for the chorus; the solo music is not as operatic as in the Neapolitan-style mass. The work was not published until the 19th century; Sir Arthur Sullivan prepared the edition for the first performances in England.
